More Details

Alcea rosea 'Nigra' is a classic single-flowered hollyhock, in deep blackcurrant-purple.

When you think of a British cottage garden, you think of hollyhocks, tall, towering stems lining a path or standing either side of a gate. They are wonderful plants that flower all summer long, no countrystyle garden is complete without them. Hollyhocks do have a tendency to rust – Copper Mixture will keep this at bay.

Group/Species rosea
Variety Nigra
Type Perennial (grown as a Biennial)

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover in April-May, or direct May-July. Place each seedling into its own pot of peat-free compost, the ideal spot for growing on has maximum all-round light. Hollyhocks will be ready for planting out in the garden by June, but won't flower well until the following year. Plant container-grown plants in spring or autumn, sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well after planting.
Care Tips Hollyhocks do have a tendency to rust; Copper Mixture will keep this at bay. Provide support to protect from wind and rain.
Flowering June - August
Vase Life Sear their stems for 20 secs before giving them a deep cool drink. Use their full height with either several colours jumbled together or a single colour in a stately vase.

It has produced an abundance of healthy leaves but no flower at all. As it is next to Hollyhock 'Appleblossom' in the same bed. I don't believe it is the soil.

The plants arrived in good condition and are still growing but have not yet flowered, probably as a result of the drought rather than any fault in the plants supplied.
