Fritillaries

Fritillaries come in many shapes and forms, from the 'Snakeshead' fritillaria meleagris with their checkerboard blooms, which are wonderful naturalised in shady settings, to the marvellous and huge crown imperial fritillaries, majestic in borders and large pots. With their pretty nodding bell-shaped flowers, fritillaries can add an exotic feel to garden borders and pots. Plant smaller varieties at the front of borders or naturalised in grass and add impact to the middle of your borders with the more statuesque varieties. Fritillaries are best grown from bulbs and should be planted as soon as they arrive in the autumn.
