We've taken the hassle out of the selection process, bringing together the very best plants and bulbs that every beginner gardener should grow and plant this summer.

this season

Think about your soil. Add a layer of mulch (compost/ mushroom compost/manure) to your beds for growing success this year

It always helps to plant the right plant in the right place, and understanding your space will help this. Pay attention to which spots get the most sun and shade throughout the day.

Fill up those bird feeders. When it comes to slug prevention, garden birds are your friends

not to be missed!

Tulip bulbs pre-order

The ideal time for planting tulip bulbs is November and December but if you're keen to have the most exclusive varieties you can pre-order here.

Shrubs, climbers and perennials

General advice is to plant these in Autumn or Spring because conditions are ideal. You can plant them at any time. Avoid frozen, waterlogged, or extremely dried out soil and your plants will be happy in the ground.

key dahlia times

We specialise in dahlias, and have a huge range. There is a dahlia for every garden whether you garden in pots, or have sprawling beds.

Summer dahlia care

Provide your dahlias with support either with netting or metal supports. Often many dahlias planted together can support one another as they grow.

Feed and deadhead

Once your dahlias are flowering keep on top of deadheading to get as many blooms as possible. You can also feed your dahlias to boost the number of flowers.

the next few months

July

Pick cut flowers to prolong flowering, deadhead roses and harvest veg, keep pots and new plants well watered.

August

Keep deadheading and harvesting, sow hardy annuals and biennials for next spring, take cuttings of pelargoniums and salvias, plan bulb orders for autumn.

September

Begin to wind down for autumn, deadhead to extend displays, plant out spring bulbs like narcissi, divide large perennials and save seeds from the garden.
