Pea 'Sugar Ann' has lovely succulent, heavy cropping, sweet edible pea pods. The young shoots and leaves at the tips of the stems are delicious too. We sow some in the garden to grow for 'Sugar Snap' peas, and some in wooden fruit boxes or gutters once a month for just their tips – the most delicious cut-and-come addition to salads and risottos (see p131 Garden Cookbook).

Genus Pisum sativum
Variety Sugar Ann
Type Hardy Annual
Common Name Sugarsnap Pea
Soil Type Neutral
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height Up to 75cm (30in)
Spacing Sow in strips with 3 rows of seeds about 4cm apart in each direction. Space rows at least 60cm (24in) apart.
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow direct March - June, or Feb-Sep for pea tips. Plant on at least 3 plantings, the first in March ,(or April on heavy ground), for summer picking, the second 4 weeks later in early summer, and the third 4 weeks later for picking in the autumn. Push the seeds lightly into the ground, and then rake the soil back over them, marking the rows at both ends.
Care Tips Easy to grow if you protect the seeds from the birds until it germinates. When the plants are an inch or two tall, stake them. If growing for pea tips, sow in gutters.
Harvesting June - August. Always pick peas young. Regular picking (ideally 2 or 3 times a week) will promote the formation of more pods.
Cooking Notes Eaten raw, freshly picked, these are perfect. As soon as you harvest them, they will begin to lose sugar as it converts to starch, so eat quickly.
