More Details

Luxurious, orange flowers with petals of plush velvet for autumn picking. This remains one of my favourite summer and autumn flowers. Plant and arrange it with black dahlias.

Genus Tithonia
Group/Species rotundiflora
Variety Torch
Type Half-Hardy Annual
Common Name Mexican Sunflower
Border Position Cutting Garden
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Well-drained
Height 1.8m (6ft)
Spacing 45cm (18in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover in mid spring. Plant out after last frosts. Pinch out tips as you plant. Half-hardy annuals will require protection until after the last frosts when they can be planted outside. Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before moving to their final position. Choose a spot in full sun or light shade, ideally with moist but well-drained soil. Prepare the final planting area well by adding plenty of organic matter (such as Orgro or home-made compost) and forking it through your topsoil. You want soil with a fine tilth (or texture). Water plants well or soak for 20 minutes in a bucket or wheelbarrow of water if they look dry. Mark out your planting positions with empty plant pots, leaving plenty of space for plants to spread. Dig holes deep and wide enough so that the roots are covered and the crown (or base) of the plant is level with the soil surface. Backfill around each plant and firm the soil gently. You should be able to tug gently on the leaves without the plant lifting out of the ground. Water them in well and water again, with a flood, not a sprinkle, every 5-7 days (if no rain), to encourage roots to be drawn down deep. For growing in pots, use as large a container as possible, as this won't dry out so quickly and will require less watering. As a general guide we recommend 9-10 plants to a 40cm (16in) diameter container.
Care Tips May need staking. Dig in plenty of organic matter to the area to which it will be planted.
Flowering July - October
Vase Life 7-10 days. Take care of the hollow flower necks as you pick and arrange, they easily bruise and break.
Harvesting Flower production: 3 months.

The seeds germinated quickly, and were on the whole strong and healthy. A few were lost in my unheated greenhouse when the weather turned cold again in late spring. The plants were planted out in early June and are now flowering strongly. Amazing zingy colour for borders or cut flowers.

The five seedlings I ordered were very poor quality (dead)! I couldn't believe that they had passed your quality control.

I phoned your helpline and the lady I spoke to apologised and couldn't have been more helpful, she replaced my order and I'm glad to say that when they arrived in a much better condition.

This experience has put me off buying plants on line!

This is the third year I have purchased Tithonia. Plants received in good condition. A very eye catching plant for 'hot' borders. Their growth this year was slower than in previous years, It is is bud now (31st July) but last year was blooming earlier in July.

These were last to arrive and one of the seedlings was already nearly dead. They seem to have been afflicted with a disease which has meant the edges of the leaves are brown and the surface of the leaves gets brown blotches. I have removed what I can and the flowers have been well worth waiting for, but its a pity the plants seem so unhealthy.

Not as good as last year, some seedlings weren’t that strong and never took off. am thinking it was because of adverse weather in the spring.

Phew what an orange, sizzling is a good description ! has flowered for months much to the appreciation of the bumblebees in my garden. Another one for my list for purchase next year.
would recommend buying as seedlings/plug plants as seeds seem to be a bit hit and miss germination wise

These grew from seed very easily and then went on growing and growing! Lovely glowing orange flowers and so many people admired them and were guessing what they were. A brave choice but so well worth it.

And the rest. I have one plant that must be closer to 8 feet tall so they have pretty much overwhelmed everything else in a narrow bed. Striking to say the least and the flowers have a certain in-your-face appeal but when they start to dwarf the more traditional sunflowers......... I'm not sure I will use again.

Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:

"Thank you for your comments. This year we had ideal conditions for this plant, as it's common name 'Mexican Sunflower' may suggest, it loved the warm conditions we had earlier in the year, and therefore most people saw larger than normal growth. We've received lots of compliments and photos from our customers who loved the height."

Wonderful Easy to Grow

I am about to order another packet of these seeds and feel compelled to comment on what a marvellous easy to grow plant they are. I don't have a greenhouse but was easily able to grow these on a window sill and then plant them out on my allotment to stunning effect. The plants grew tall and were covered in glowing orange flowers right through until the end of october. The bees absolutely love these flowers as they are loaded full of pollen and I often had to shake off a fat lazy bee when I was picking them. They are a brilliant cut flower having a nice sturdy stem, and last really well, looking particularly good with dark dahlias and sunflowers.
