Sow under cover from March-May. Sow seeds thinly. Don’t cover seeds with soil, they need light and warmth (18-26 degrees) to germinate (7-10 days). Pot on and plant out after the frosts, space/thin 40cm (16in). Can sow direct in April/May.

Most of us would not have been seen dead with these in our garden five years ago — too Maiden Aunt to be stylish, but this has been turned on its head and now the whole strawflower brigade are one of the trendiest things you can grow, because they look good dried all through the year and home-grown give you the most sustainable decorations and vases ever.

Care Tips

Plant out after the last frosts. Feed and deadhead to prolong the flowering period.
