Description

One of the must-have plants for our ornamental veg garden, a green curly kale more compact than others, so ideal as a pretty, low-maintenance, edible border to a veg garden bed. We interplant with frilly double tulips in spring and pick both. Harvestable all year, if you keep cutting the tips, you can sort of bonsai this, and grow it in a large container on your winter doorstep. Here I grow it by my back door in an animal water trough, mixed with hyacinths for picking all winter with the addition of the scent of hyacinths in spring.

Care Tips

Grows best on soil which has been manured the previous autumn. Protect against cabbage white butterflies with fine netting. Firm the soil well around plant base to prevent wind rock and provide stakes to support tall plants in autumn.
