Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow undercover February-March. Sow as thinly as you can into seed trays, individual small pots or modules. Zinnias are best sown in modules to avoid root disturbance. Place somewhere warm and keep moist until germination occurs, usually within a couple of weeks. Prick out and pot on when seedlings are 2-3cm (1 inch) tall and have developed a pair of 'true' leaves. If sown into modules/pots wait until roots have filled their individual modules before potting on. Once germinated, good light levels, cool air temperatures (just above freezing) and warm roots are ideal for growing on. All-round light is also important in forming strong, bulky plants. Harden off before planting out at the recommended spacing when all danger of frost has passed. Sow direct May-June, later than most annuals as zinnias hate cold nights.
Care Tips Best grown in fertile, humus-rich, and well-drained soil, in full sun. Pinch out the tips when the plants have 3-5 pairs of leaves, to encourage branching and more flower production. Water in well, with a drown not a sprinkle, for two weeks or so while the roots get established after which you should be able to stop watering unless there’s a prolonged period of dry weather. Stake plants individually or grow through netting or mesh. Ensure supports are in place while plants are still young, if they collapse over, they’ll never grow or flower as well as when vertically supported. Zinnias have a tendency to botrytis, especially during damp and cool weather so it is important to ensure good air circulation around plants and tidy up any dead or dying leaves and plant material. Picking or deadheading is necessary to prolong blooming and encourage branching.
