More Details

Euphorbia oblongata is the all round best-looking, longest-flowering foliage plant you can find anywhere in the world. It forms the base of 95% of my floral arrangements, and lines most of the beds in my garden at Perch Hill.

You never tire of their brilliant acid-green flowers and bold, strong shapes. It is really a short-lived perennial, but it flowers best in its first year, so we treat it as a hardy annual.

Please note: This is toxic if eaten. It is a skin and eye irritant.

Genus Euphorbia oblongata
Group/Species oblongata
Type Short-lived Perennial (grown as a Hardy Annual)
Common Name Eggleaf spurge, Oblong spurge
Border Position Front, Middle
Soil Type Neutral
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 50cm (20in)
Spacing Thin to 40-45cm (15-18in). 60cm (24in) spread.
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover in Feb-April and September. Sow direct or plant out in April and August.
Care Tips Cut stems back as they brown to allow room for new growth. There's just one word of warning with any euphorbia - pick it with your washing up gloves on. Its milky sap can cause an allergic reaction, particularly on a hot sunny day.
Flowering May - December, 16 weeks from spring sowing of seed.
Vase Life 7-10 days. Soak overnight and sear the stems for 30 seconds to stop the sap leaking out. Take care when picking, wear gloves and avoid white sap which can burn.
Harvesting Flower production: 9 months.

This is a fabulous plant! A real pop of colour. I grow mine on my allotment as part of my cutting garden and it looks wonderful in a vase with some of my lovely Sarah Raven dahlias! It would look wonderful as part of a border display too. It is still looking good at the moment (early December) and I would recommend it to anyone for any garden.

Performed very well - had a nice display next to dahlias. I really like all euphorbias and always had them in my gardens.
But this time I had a very nasty accident with the sap - possibly due to my sensitive skin. Knowing about the irritant I was wearing gloves but somehow must have accidently touched my lips and eye - my face blew like a baloon.
Perhaps a notice should be sent with the plants.

It's much harder to grow these from seed. Having the jumbo seedlings arrive at just the right moment in the spring, meant I could plant them out in exactly the right positions at the front of my tropical-gravel garden. They have bushed out beautifully and framed the pots and exotic flowers all summer.

They have been ok and will be better next year I imagine.

One of my Moerheim Beauty helenium did not thrive and died although the other two have been lovely. All grown & cared for together.

Dahlias....gorgeous Totally Tangerine! beautiful Sam Hopkins, but some grow in odd way back to back, unhelpful for flower arranging. The Bp Aukland have not appeared but may have been affected by old dahlias which I thought had died but grew massively to my surprise. All grown in very sunny border. Scura died in a container, just leaves which shrivelled.
,
Pelargonium Regalia Chocolate, slow start, fine, will bring in & hope much bigger next year...lovely colour.

Will order my tulips v soon! Our garden is v important as we are elderly & at home all the time.

Brilliant planted along the border

Reviewed 12th June 2018 by Anu Bhatt

I bought 10 plants two years ago and they are still going strong after the cold winter lasted year. I left the top foliage on over winter and in March, there were shoots emerging from the base of the plant. So it was easy to prune out the old stems. The plants are all up to full height within a couple of months and blooming beautifully. I’ve ordered more plants to line another border now:)

I bought 5 seedlings last year out of curiosity really as I'd never heard of this plant, although I have other perennial euphorbias in my garden. Last summer the seedlings all did really well and filled out wonderfully, and to my astonishment, as I thought they should be treated as annuals, went through our Yorkshire winter ! Now they're looking fabulous so earlier this year I sent for another five which are doing well too. I am so pleased with them and being shorter than some euphorbias they're great for providing foliage colour in a vase of summer flowers. Plus I think lime green in a garden is always a bonus. Definitely recommended.

easy to grow outdoors

Reviewed 15th July 2016 by Sophie Cooke

To begin with, I was a bit disappointed at how slow/patchy the germination was: I was starting them off indoors (just a few), and it wasn't a success. So I took the couple that had germinated, and then also sowed other seed direct into the ground in May. We are in Scotland so maybe this is April elsewhere ;) Completely delighted to find that pretty much all the seed I sowed direct outdoors has now sprouted into pretty lime green plants along my borders.

this is the first year I have grown this and will definitely do so again. It looks great in a vase complementing other cut flowers and lasts really well. It also looks good at the front of perennial beds. It has been a little slow to get going so start early!

Love It!

I did order these rather late in the season as seedlings, so they have taken a while to establish & flower, but now they have got going I am so pleased. Lime green is such a great colour anywhere in the garden. I'll be ordering more next year. PS - I've grown mine in pots. They would probably be even better in the ground.
