I was bowled over by these in our alstroe trials last summer and autumn. If pulled (like rhubarb), not cut, they just keep on flowering and then last 3 weeks in the vase.
We love to hate alstroes, but you can't say that about this rich and exotic, hot off the breeding bench trio.
This collection contains 1 plant each of:Common Name | Peruvian Lily |
Border Position | Cutting Garden |
Soil Type | Broad Tolerance |
Scent | Unscented |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Well-drained |
Height | 60cm (24in) |
Spacing | 45cm (18in) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Plant alstroemerias in a sheltered site, in part shade or full sun, any time between May and August (once the frosts are over). Add plenty of grit to the planting hole, plus plenty of organic matter and sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole. Water well after planting. If you have a greenhouse it is well worth growing alstromeria inside too. Pot them up into 5L pots and keep frost free. Feed and water well once they start to shoot in spring and they should give you an almost continual flower harvest. Propagate by division in April. The roots are fragile and need to be lifted and divided with care and replanted immediately. |
Care Tips | Add a slow-release fertiliser in the spring and water regularly in dry weather. Stake plants so they don't collapse in the wind or rain, and keep picking the flowers - the best way is to pull them rather than cutting. Mulch deeply for the first couple of winters and if you live in a cooler part of the country. Hardy with a mulch once established. Handle with gloves, so that the sap does not cause irritation. |
Flowering | May - September |
Vase Life | Arrange with a drop of bleach in their flower water, and with new water every 4-5 days they should last 3 weeks in a vase. |

Dark and Rich Alstroemeria Collection reviews
Reviewed 21st November 2018 by Glenda Highly recommend these beautiful plants. They arrived in good condition and flowered throughout the summer and still habe some flowers now. |
Reviewed 21st November 2018 by Meredith Plants are sub standard in my opinion- I have other alstroemerias and in comparison, these are weak unhealthy plants that have not grown well. Also very pricey. Won’t buy from SR again which is a shame. |
Reviewed 21st November 2018 by Teresa Service was good & the Alstroemerias are a lovely colour. I hope they survive the winter as they were quite late flowering and were quite small. I might order some more next year. |

Reviewed 3rd September 2018 by Jenifer I had three plants, one of then was hardly there at all very small and the leaves were darkly marked and it didn't grow. One grew and didn't flower and died [I planted them all in large pots],The last one has just flowered in the last week and there isn't much to it and I can't send you a picture because the three stems that grew and flowered I have picked and they're in a vase in the house. I am sorry because when they arrived I was disappointed and took pictures to send you which I didn't do and have recently taken the photos off my phone, I live on top of a hill not in a town, the weather has been lovely this year but rain then hot sun continually and its quite wild here. Maybe they're better off in a small town garden I don't know but I really love them visually. Maybe I haven't looked after the two that were growing properly whatever that means I just put them in pots watered them when I thought they needed it. Maybe its too wild up here. Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for leaving your review. We are very sorry to hear of your disappointment with your Alstroemeria and have refunded you for them." Posted 7th November 2018 |
