More Details

A brilliant acid-green cut flower filler, with so many different roles. The leaves are invaluable in the kitchen, I use its flowers for decorating salads and for arrangements, and the seeds for baking and tagines.

As a cut flower, it's good with whites and blues or rich, brilliant colours to heighten their contrasts. This will self-sow freely.

Genus Anethum
Group/Species graveolens
Type Biennial or Short-lived Perennial
Common Name Dill, Anet
Border Position Cutting Garden
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Well-drained
Height 90cm (36in)
Spacing 30cm (12in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Use moist seed compost and sow thinly in April, covering with only a fine layer of soil. The seedlings will emerge in two weeks or so. Further sowings can be made during the spring and early summer to extend the harvest time. Dill hates having its roots being disturbed or being transplanted, so plant out young seedlings where you wish them to remain avoid potting them on. Do not allow soil or compost to dry out, especially during hot, dry summers, but do not over water. Support plants with garden canes or twiggy sticks to prevent them toppling over. Hoe around plants to prevent weeds from competing.
Care Tips Don’t allow plants to sit in very wet soil, water is only needed whilst establishing a tap-root and in extreme times of draught. Plants will self-sow freely and may require some support.
Flowering July - October, 10 weeks from spring sowing
Vase Life 7-10 days.
Harvesting Flower production: 6-8 weeks.
Cooking Notes Remove most of the leaves and use them in salads/cooking. The flowers are also edible.
