A delicious and lemony herb with a hint of ginger - a favourite. This has survived outside for years at Perch Hill, planted at the foot of a south-facing wall.
Genus | Aloysia |
Group/Species | citrodora |
Type | Tender Sub-shrub |
Common Name | Lemon Verbena, Verveine |
Soil Type | Neutral, Sandy |
Scent | Scented |
Site | Full Sun, Shelter |
Moisture | Well-drained |
Height | 1m (3ft 3in) in a container; up to 2.5m (8ft 2in) in a border |
Spacing | 30cm (12in) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Lemon verbena is easy to grow in a sheltered spot, such as the foot of a sunny wall – if the roots are locked in cold, damp soil all winter it will die. Alternatively, grow in a container (minimum 30cm diameter) or dig up young plants in the autumn, put in a pot, and keep in a frost-free greenhouse for planting out the following spring. If growing in a container, water thoroughly to encourage the roots to establish and water once a week from then on, keeping the soil moist but not allowing the roots to become clogged. |
Care Tips | Harvest leaves by cutting back stems above a pair of leaves, regular cutting prevents the plant fdrom becoming 'leggy'. Cut back to half its size in the autumn and mulch to protect the roots if growing in a border. |
Flowering | June - November |
Storing | Can be dried, frozen or made into a flavoured butter. |
Harvesting | Harvest leaves as required throughout summer for use in teas and to flavour recipes. |

Reviewed 7th November 2018 by Frances Absolutely loved this plant, gave some of the rooted cuttings to friends, put mine in a large pot. The growth of the Lemon verbena was incredible, wonderful smell and used the leaves in tea, and added leaves to water to make a lemon spritz for freshening up linen. Good value healthy plants, arrived very well packaged. |

Reviewed 20th September 2018 by Michael I have struggled to keep them going in the dry weather, but now looking healthy but with only limited flowering. Original plants were excellent. I am just worried as to how to carry them through to next year. |
Reviewed 20th September 2018 by Phyllis Sadly the delivery system doesn't work for me - the seedlings all ended up sitting for a couple of days before I could unbox them, most went mouldy and none survived. No judgement on the quality and I understand the benefit of the system that sends when the plants are ready but it doesn't work for someone who travels regularly. If there was a way to pick delivery windows that would be great, otherwise will have to go back to garden centres. |

Lemon Verbena
Reviewed 18th April 2017 by Hazel Salisbury
I love lemon verbena tea and 5 of these plugs kept me well supplied over the summer and autumn months. They struggled a bit when I first tried to put them outdoors as the weather was quite cold and wet, so I kept them indoors until conditions outside were more settled and they haven't looked back since. They are in a pot and grew well to around 2 feet tall, making a strong bushy shrub. |
