More Details

One of the prettiest wild flowers and a stalwart of the cutting patch - every garden should have some.

Loved by pollinators and brilliant as cut flowers. We use lots of them to make table runners and napkin rings for wedding and party flowers, as they last brilliantly out of water.

Genus Centaurea
Group/Species cyanus
Variety Blue Boy
Type Hardy Annual
Common Name Cornflower
Border Position Cutting Garden
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Well-drained
Height 1.2m (4ft)
Spacing 30cm (12in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow March-May or August-October either under cover or direct into the garden. Thin to 30cm (12in). Late sowings in pots can either be planted out in autumn or overwintered under cover for planting out in spring.
Care Tips Make sowings at two to three-week intervals to prolong the display. Sowing in curves, rather than straight lines, often creates a more natural-looking effect. Water well until established. Keep picking or deadhead to encourage more blooms. Will self-sow.
Flowering June - August, 10-12 weeks from spring sowing
Vase Life 5-7 days. Dries well.
Harvesting Flower production: 2-3 months. This is a cut-and-come-again variety.

again I take the blame for this. I planted them in the wrong place. Poor soil and not enough sunlight

Absolutely ace. Strong. Can fight their way up through moon daisies and poppies. Outlast the other wild flowers too. Add such an intense blue to wild flower areas. However I didn’t sowdirect.

The seeds have germinated well and I am very pleased with the results. With hindsight I wish I had bought a shorter variety of cornflower that would not have needed staking.
Generally I have been very satisfied with both seeds and plants I have bought from you.

The seedlings were quite small when they arrived but I potted them on as instructed and later planted them out on our Church Allotment twhere they thrived and have provided us with blooms throughout the summer. Pre delivery service quick and efficient.

I had a go at growing these from seed and planting them in the autumn to overwinter, and it worked brilliantly - I was picking the first cornflowers in mid-May, just as the tulips went over, and they are not only beautiful but also prolific. A huge success.

It's the first year I have grown these beautiful little blue cherubs which just keep sprouting and sprouting and are still even sprouting new flowers nearly into November- they have been a central focal point in the walled garden at East Pennard and on open days It has been a great conversation topic and hopefully Sarah may have some more custom from it- I have used quite a lot tossed into salad bags which I grow and they look sublime- great bee attractor and very productive anual and with the amount of seed saved I will never need to buy a packet again

Gorgeous colour

These were the most brilliant blue, really showy, and grew easily from seed. I note that they are even bigger from autumn sowing so I will have a go. Excellent in a vase, they fade gently. I really love these!
