More Details

An early carrot, whose roots are good, short and so easier to grow. It is sweet and tasty and quick to crop. The first one I sow in my garden and ideal for those with small gardens as it can be grown in a pot.

This produces beautiful long cylindrical carrots about 15cm in length. Inter sow with Spring Onion 'North Holland Blood Red' to deter carrot root fly.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow tape direct April-July or from March under cloches. Make a drill where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½in) deep, directly into well-prepared soil. For ease, secure one end of the tape with a large stone or cane, roll out the tape into the drill and gently pull tight to straighten. Cover tape with soil. Keep moist. Allow 30cm (12in) between rows. Sow at 3-4 week intervals for a continuous supply.
Care Tips Prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Keep well watered, and cover with a protective fleece. Start preparing your soil in early winter, digging over and removing stones.

Storing On a light soil, carrots are best left in the ground. Even after the frosts, leave them where they are, covering them with a thick layer of straw. On a heavy soil, dig them up and store.
Harvesting Harvest March-October. Keep well watered during dry spells as this will prevent roots from splitting. Carrots are best grown in raised beds and/or covered with Enviromesh, or even grown inside in a greenhouse to protect against carrot root fly. Lift by November to store in winter.
Cooking Notes Pulled in summer, these are lovely just washed and eaten raw, or cooked very simply - steam them for 6-7 minutes, or try Sarah's delicious Slow-roasted carrots with garlic lemon butter recipe when these have been sown later in the season. Carrot tops can also be eaten.
