Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Sow March under cloches, or sow outdoors from April-June in a weed free, sunny position in fertile, light, well drained soil. Sow thinly if you can to avoid the need for thinning later. Carrots dislike freshly manured soils so seed beds are best prepared in autumn, well in advance of spring sowings. |
Care Tips | Water well to encourage germination. Once germinated, carrots should be watered only when necessary to keep the soil moist as excessive water may encourage leaf growth instead of roots. As plants develop, carrots may be earthed up to prevent green crowns developing. Grow under Enviromesh to protect against carrot root fly. |
Storing | On a light soil, carrots are best left in the ground. Even after the frosts, leave them where they are, covering them with a thick layer of straw. On a heavy soil, dig them up and store. |
Harvesting | 8-10 weeks from sowing, as required. June - October. Harvest in the evening to deter carrot root fly. Lift by November to store over the winter months. |
Cooking Notes | Pulled in summer, these are lovely just washed and eaten raw, or cooked very simply - steam them for 6-7 minutes, or try Sarah's delicious Slow-roasted carrots with garlic lemon butter recipe when these have been sown later in the season. Carrot tops can also be eaten. |
