Kale seaweed recipe
One of my favourite snacks for a winter party. Because of the amount of oil in the cooking, a little goes a long way.

We should all grow this plant. It's delicious shallow-fried, makes the best Chinese seaweed and looks and tastes fantastic all through the year, fitting well into an ornamental border.
Try 'Redbor' raw, finely chopped in an autumn salad with slithers of raw pumpkin, marinated in lemon juice and dressed with Parmesan and olive oil – fantastic. Kale is a fantastic winter 'superfood'.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Sow March-early August. Can be started under cover (in individual cells or gutters to minimise root disturbance) or sow direct April-July. Regular sowings made every two to three weeks will ensure a continuous supply. Kale are very hardy and grow in poorer soils than other brassicas. They like a sunny spot, on well-drained soil. Keep well-watered. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions before planting out. |
Care Tips | Grows best on soil which has been manured the previous autumn. Firm the soil well around the plant base to prevent wind rock and keep moist. Protect against cabbage white butterflies. May also be grown in large containers. Apply lime to acidic soils to lessen the risk of clubroot. |
Storing | Store in the fridge for up to 10 days, or in the freezer for 6 months. |
Harvesting | Pick all through winter and early spring, from October to May. This will produce it's characteristic frilly leaves for 6 months. Harvest once the leaves get to about 15cm long. |
Cooking Notes | The leaves can be shallow or deep fried, also steamed or in a winter salsa verde. |
