Type Half-Hardy Annual
Common Name Tomato
Soil Type Fertile

Moisture Well-drained
Height 1.2-2m (4ft-6ft 5in)
Spacing 45cm (18in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Transplant seedlings into 9cm (3.5in) pots and grow on in a glasshouse (or a well-lit windowsill), once roots have filled these, transplant into 2 litre pots to grow on. When the first flowers begin to show their yellow colouring plants should be ready to plant into their final positions. For unheated greenhouses, final planting can take place in mid-spring. For growing outside, gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions before planting out in early summer. When planting into ground, add plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting and create a shallow circular reservoir around the plant to help retain water or use Ring Culture Pots. Leave 60-90cm (24-36in) between each plant and plant them deep, sinking them to a depth of 0.5cm below the seed leaves. For containers, use a large pot (minimum 5 litres) and fill with a good quality, peat-free compost. For Grow Bags, allow two plants per bag.
Care Tips Under cover or outside they need staking, regular watering and weekly feeding for best results. Water the soil, not the plant, tomato leaves and stems dislike getting wet. Pinch out the tops once they have set 5 or 6 trusses. You also need to pinch out any shoots that develop between the stem and main branches as they divert valuable energy from the developing fruits. Companion planting works well with tomatoes. Try basil underneath as a sacrificial planting – white fly is drawn to it rather than your tomatoes – or try garlic, nasturtiums or tagetes to repel aphids. Storing Tomatoes can be kept at room temperature for 4-5 days (they will lose their flavour if kept in the fridge), and will freeze well.
Harvesting July-October
Cooking Notes Whenever you cook tomatoes, aim to include a mix of colours to get a spectrum of pigments for extra health, variation in acidity and sweetness and therefore the greatest depth of flavour.

Great selection of tomatoes. Love the different colours and shapes. They are so expensive in the supermarkets, I can't believe I haven't grown them before. Plants arrived well packaged and healthy as with everything I've purchased from Sarah Raven. Will buy again.

Healthy plants which have grown well outside despite wind and rain. Sun gold and Chocolate tomato are more prolific than santonio. I like the flavour of the chocolate tomato

I wouldn’t grow anything else, even my husband is converted to small fruited tomatoes after years of trying to get me to grow Mamande type ones. We have been picking fruit since beginning of July and they are delicious

I would have liked to see the tomato plants I bought as a pack in packs of the same tomato item or more variety but great quality and arrived in top quality condition.

Fabulous sweet peas marred only by the fact the ones in the collection which failed were the Aegean Blue. They were weak and I only had about 3 flowers. Despite this the remainder were lovely.

These were planted in a grow bag outside and have been brilliant with one plant in particular doing exceptionally well. I have just picked the last tomates from it.

The seedlings arrived when forecast and I planted then in my greenhouse. The crop was excellent and brilliant flavour. I would comment that the final growing height would help as I did not expect them to grow to 6ft!!

We grew these cherry tomatoes one each in five large containers in different sunny spots in the garden. They all grew well and cropped prolifically, producing loads of really sweet tasty fruit. At times we had so many we had to give some away. Will definitely get them again next year.

Really pleased with these - we have had kilos i.e. plenty for ourselves and for giving to friends and family. I took a risk and planted them outside, but as it was against a south facing brick wall the bet paid off. We did lots of watering - natural ground but a relatively small rooting area. This summer may prove to have been very exceptional but I will repeat the experiment. Loved the sungold variety! Basically loved the fact that we had 5 different varieties (though 1 failed) and was replaced from the local garden centre.

I have absolutely loved the varieties included in this collection. The plants thrived in the sunshine outdoors and I've had a fantastic yield...the plants are still producing even now though I anticipate they will find themselves in a green chutney before long!

This year was too cold in my unheated greenhouse to start my own seedlings, so I decided to buy all plants in. May continue to do this as it was much easier and a lot less work. I only grew cherry tomatoes this year and they are still producing so pleased.

I was quite disappointed at first as each time I opened the package the seedlings were either broken or dead.
I think it was finally the fourth delivery that was successful
It was dealt with promptly but just annoying that I had to keep complaining, the cherry and plum variety were success ful, the ichocolate ones not so,I also purchased the dahlia collection for pots the first delivery didn’t! Grow at all the second delivery only two flowered, I was disappointed as I have a wonderful selection of your dahlias in the garden and was looking forward to the same on my terrace. So all in all a few problems this year.

Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:

"Thank you for leaving your review. We are very sorry to hear of your disappointment with your Cherry tomato Collection and have refunded you for them. We note that you have already been refunded for the dahlia For Pots Collection."
