More Details

I spent time when I was a child staying in the beautiful medieval hill town, Asolo, in the foothills of the Dolomites in Italy. We used to buy mixed baby leaf salad in the market, and take it home and dress it with a little olive oil and lemon juice. This mix of salad leaves is inspired by the memory.

We sowed this in September last year, and were still picking from the same patch in June. Incredible, and hugely recommended – I love it.

This mix contains:
  • Lettuce 'Little Gem'
  • Lettuce 'Tango'
  • Lettuce 'Red Batavia'
  • Lettuce 'Green Batavia'
  • Lettuce 'Cerbiatta'
  • Lettuce 'Red Salad Bowl'
Genus Lactuca
Group/Species sativa
Variety Cerbiatta, Green Batavia, Little Gem, Red Batavia, Red Salad Bowl, Tango
Type Hardy Annual
Common Name Lettuce
Soil Type Fertile, Neutral
Site Part Shade
Moisture Moist
Spacing 20-25cm (8-10in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Direct sow in small batches every 4-6 weeks from February-early September. Water the drill before sowing to decrease temperatures and sow in the evening. Can also sow in modules under cover from February-September. You can speed the germination process up by sowing into a length of guttering under cover and transplanting outside.
Care Tips The plants will be happiest in a cool, northern bed. Hot weather inhibits germination & increases the likelihood of bolting.
Storing Pick just before serving.
Harvesting 6-8 weeks from sowing, giving leaves for about 3 months. Harvest just outer leaves so plant can continue to grow. Successional sowing should provide leaves nearly all year. Keep picking regularly to prevent flowers running to seed.
Cooking Notes Wash well.

Easy to germinate, provided a good mix of cut and come again lettuce (even throughout the winter).

Delicious Salad, Very Easy to Grow

This delicious salad mix is the perfect combination of textures and flavours. I've grown it in a container pot out in my back garden (in the middle of a city) and it's grown perfectly quickly and well with very minimal effort.
