Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow March-September into gutters for transplanting outside, or direct in blocks or drills in the garden. Sow thinly, every 2-3 weeks for a continual supply. Avoid sowing in mid-summer or the plants may run to seed. When seedlings are 2-3cm (1in) tall, thin to 30cm (12in) for harvesting leaves fully grown or 10-15cm (4-6in) for cut-and-come-again salad leaf, picked at baby leaf stage.
Care Tips Dig the soil before sowing or planting, removing large stones or weeds, incorporate plenty of garden compost or well-rotted manure. Rake to a fine tilth. Keep free of weeds and water plants when dry. Provide protection from October with a cloche or fleece. For growing spinach in pots, choose a pot that is least 15-20cm (6-8in) deep.
Harvesting 8–10 weeks from sowing (3–4 weeks for baby leaf), March - November. Keep picking regularly to prevent running to seed. If you have a greenhouse or polytunnel, can also be grown inside for picking all winter.
Cooking Notes Enjoy baby leaves raw in salads, steam or stir-fry larger leaves.
