I use rootrainers for sweet peas, maincrop beans and peas and for taking all my cuttings. The legumes thrive with a long thin root run and the cutting's roots bulk up more quickly giving you stronger plants. The original and low maintenance sets are brilliant all-rounders, especially good for sweet peas, and the large size is brilliant for broad and runner beans.

The rootrainer is easy to open when you want to remove your plants, and there is minimal root damage. Simply fill the cells with compost and push a seed down 2-3cms in to it. Full instructions included with all sets.

Original Set includes:

  • 32 reusable cells
  • Frame – H.13cm, W.22cm, L.37cm
  • Propagator lid

Low Maintenance Set includes:

  • 32 reusable cells
  • Frame – H.13cm, W.22cm, L.37cm
  • Propagator Lid and Base Tray
  • Capillary Matting, to place in the base tray so you need to water less.

Large Set includes:

  • 40 reusable cells
  • Frame – H.20cm, W.27cm, L.44cm

Wish it wasn't plastic and a bit more robust, but does a great job for the seedlings, so I'll be looking after it carefully to make it last. Perhaps it will be recyclable one day.

Root Trainers are fantastic for sweet peas and cuttings. I am still using some that I bought five years ago so although expensive they are good value if you look after them.
I use them for sweet peas from October to march, then for legumes for the veg. Garden in the Spring and then cuttings from late July early August, so they work hard.
