A slightly spicy Japanese green that is one of my favourite bulk leaves for spring, autumn and winter salads. Its sharply serrated, bright green leaves look lovely in the salad bowl. An essential 'desert island plant' in my garden that I grow almost all year round.
Please note, illustrated packets are being introduced gradually over the coming months, availability may vary.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting | February-April and August-October. Direct sow in lines or blocks, or under cover for winter cropping. You can speed the germination process up by sowing into a length of guttering under cover and transplanting outside. |
Care Tips | Remove any caterpillars lurking on the leaves. Perfect for undercropping sweetcorn or broccoli. Can be grown in container pots. |
Harvesting | March-May and August-March, 4-6 weeks from sowing. Cut above bottom set of leaves so plant can continue to grow. Leaves will produce for 2-3 months per sowing. Keep picking regularly to prevent flowers running to seed. |
Cooking Notes | Like all salad leaves, immerse the leaves in cold water for five minutes after picking to plump them up. |
