A great way to grow sweet peas, or beans. Sow two seeds to a biodegradable tube and plant them out in pairs too, so they have no root disturbance.
Root penetration of the sides and base will usually occur within five weeks. These also work well for beans, onions, leeks and tap-rooted plants.

Didn't work well in heavy clay soil
Reviewed 25th February 2017 by Kate4
I used these last year. Agreed, the weather was poor last spring, and I was planting them into heavy clay soil, but the sweet pea seedlings didn't grow at all until I dug down into the soil in May and removed the tubes. Eventually I had a good crop of flowers, but nearly two months later than usual. Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"We are sorry to hear that you have experienced disappointing results from these sweet pea tubes, the tubes are normally used whilst the seed is germinating and the root system is forming. Once the root system is strong and the frosts have past we would then recommend planting the plugs outside, at this stage you can remove the tubes as they're no longer needed, or alternatively, plant out and the tubes should disintegrate in the soil over time. We are sorry to learn that this didn’t happen when you planted them out and so we will action a full refund on your order for the cost of the tubes. Apologies again, Sarah Raven Customer Services" Posted 13th March 2017 |
