More Details

Simply my favourite annual of our trials in 2017, every flower a slightly different mix of coffee mousse with a wash of cassis. Subtle, smoky and unbelievably pretty.

Genus Phlox
Group/Species drummondii
Variety Crème Brûlée
Type Half-Hardy Annual
Common Name Annual phlox
Border Position Cutting Garden
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but well-drained
Height 30cm (12in)
Spacing 30cm (12in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover in early spring. Use a good quality seed compost, sow seeds into trays, modules or pots at a depth of 1.5cm, keep the soil moist, germination should occur within 2-3 weeks. Prick out and pot on when seedlings are 2-3cm (1 inch) tall and have developed a pair of 'true' leaves. If you have sown into modules/pots then allow roots to fill their individual modules before potting on. Once germinated, good light levels, cool air temperatures (just above freezing) and warm roots are ideal for growing on. All-round light is also important in forming strong, bulky plants. Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before moving to their final position. Also thrives from being sown direct where they are to flower in late spring.
Care Tips Deadhead to prolong flowering. This is an ideal plant for a container pot. Keep the soil moist.
Flowering July-October
Vase Life Reliable cut flower with no need for conditioning.
Harvesting Flowers July-October. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Reliable cut flower with no need for conditioning.

I noticed a marked decline in quality of plants I ordered this year. They arrived leggy, some roots way overmature and some not well rooted at all. You did replace some but they weren’t much better. Verbena Sissinghurst bloomed well but others a disappointment. Something has definitely changed this year. I have been a frequent customer and though you are more expensive than the garden centre I always felt you were worth the extra. Not so sure anymore.

Just too cold this spring, never took off, grew etiolated and very poor.

I am afraid all the seedlings died

I was sent another phlox instead of the one that I had ordered. I did receive a refund but I was disappointed.

The seedlings were spindly and fragile and despite greatest care some of them broke. Nearly sent them back but decided TLC was easier. Those that survived eventually flowered and I really loved the subtle colours but I don't really think I got my money's worth.

Arrived looking very tall and weedy and never really got going. What flowers there were didn’t match up to expectations, a little dull, but everything else I have had have been lovely.

I liked the description in the catalogue for this plant. Unfortunately, one of the seedlings didn't survive, hence the 4 stars. I planted the others in pots containing nemesia Wisley vanilla. They were a good addition to the pots and I loved the colour.

The plants arrived well packaged and in excellent condition. They have flowered constantly in their pots over the summer becoming the focal point of my patio. Several comments on their beautiful colour.

Rather disappointing. Won't order again. They were rather scanty and ho hum!

Again, these tiny seedlings were loved and cared for and brought on before being planted out in beds. I do think the hot summer was partly to blame for their slow performance, as they are now still flowering, and I love the flowers, and they are much admired. Rather straggly habit though, and not sure I'd repeat.

I could only award three stars for the actual product received as it took attempts to receive seedlings in a reasonable condition. They had definitely suffered from our late Spring. Some had rotted off too. I did manage to raise more plants from seed myself. When they do get going they are a fabulous addition to the cutting garden. The vase life is excellent and scent a welcome addition. Customer service was first class in replacing the poor seedlings without quibble. However, they just weren’t healthy seedlings so couldn’t rate higher. As a plant to grow they are definitely worth a 5*, so don’t be put off.

Plants looked forced into flower before they had developed a substantial plant. they have flowered, but did not improve when potted on into 9F pots. I then planted them as they were not prospering, and have improved slightly and stayed in flower in the border though stems bent . I will be surprised if they survive the winter.

I was longing to see these flower - such a gorgeous colour - they were just coming out, when, overnight they were eaten by the deer! Then the heatwave didn't help, but since it got cooler they have flourished - and are looking beautiful.

Instantly slugged

These arrived looking very healthy and I potted them on the same day. Alas, they were slugged on their first night. I've hopefully managed to rescue 3 with subsequent protection but 2 were completely destroyed. Very disappointing.
