More Details

Copper flowers are IT and never more so than when they are a perennial foxglove which flowers in the sun or shade from mid-spring to midsummer, stuffed full of nectar, like a skyscraper of cafes, one on top of another, for butterflies and bees.

Group/Species parviflora
Type Hardy Perennial
Common Name Small-Flowered Foxglove
Border Position Back, Middle
Soil Type Fertile, Neutral

Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 60cm (24in)
Spacing 30cm (12in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Surface sow on trays of moist compost, press in lightly. Do not cover the seed as it needs light to germinate. Digitalis will usually germinate within 2-3 weeks at around 20°C. Prick out each seedling when large enough to handle and transplant into individual pots to grow on. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a couple of weeks before planting out after the frosts. May also be sown direct. Plant in groups of 3 or more. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well after planting.
Care Tips After flowering cut down the main flower spikes to encourage side shoots known as 'princes'. After seed has been set cut plant to the ground and apply a mulch of organic matter. Caution: All parts of this plant are highly toxic if ingested, wear gloves when handling.
