Sowing, Seeds, Planting Surface sow on trays of moist compost, press in lightly. Do not cover the seed as it needs light to germinate. Digitalis will usually germinate within 2-3 weeks at around 20°C. Prick out each seedling when large enough to handle and transplant into individual pots to grow on. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a couple of weeks before planting out after the frosts. Plant in groups of 3 or more. Foxgloves will grow in most soils (except very wet or very dry) but prefer fertile soil in a semi-shaded spot. To help plants establish sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole. See our advice pages for a guide to sowing and growing foxgloves.
Care Tips Remove the first flower spike early to encourage more 'prince' flowers from the base. May require protection from severe frost. Caution: All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested.
