More Details

I fell on this collection of foxgloves in our trial last summer, picking them and loving them jumbled in a jug inside as well as growing in the garden. The Dalmatian series is an F1 type, consistently long-flowering, even in its first year.

If you remove the first year spent flower stems by trimming back to the base of the plant, this will aid overwintering and encourage a second year of bloom. Allow plants to form seed in the second year and they may self-sow to continue the cycle in your garden.

The seed packet contains a mix of the following varieties and the seedling collection contains 1 jumbo seedling each of:
  • Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Peach' F1 Hybrid
  • Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Purple' F1 Hybrid
  • Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Cream' F1 Hybrid
  • Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Rose' F1 Hybrid
  • Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian White' F1 Hybrid
Genus Digitalis
Group/Species F1 Hybrid
Variety Dalmatian
Type Hardy Biennial
Common Name Foxglove
Border Position Back, Middle
Soil Type Acid, Fertile, Neutral
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 60cm (24in)
Spacing 40cm (16in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Surface sow on trays of moist compost, press in lightly. Do not cover the seed as it needs light to germinate. Digitalis will usually germinate within 2-3 weeks at around 20°C. Prick out each seedling when large enough to handle and transplant into individual pots to grow on. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a couple of weeks before planting out after the frosts. Plant in groups of 3 or more. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well after planting.
Care Tips Foxgloves appreciate humus rich soil, slightly on the acid side, out of direct sunlight. Remove the first flower spike early to encourage more 'prince' flowers from the base. Caution: All parts of this plant are highly toxic if ingested, wear gloves when handling.
