Sowing, Seeds, Planting Seeds can be sown under cover at any time of year but are best sown direct in spring once the temperature warms a little. A week before sowing, fork and rake over the ground several times to establish a soil surface with a fine and level tilth free of all weeds and large stones, scatter and incorporate a general organic fertiliser over the site. May also be sown under cover in modules.
Care Tips Once sorrel plants are established and growing happily, they need very little further attention beyond a bit of weeding, and watering during dry spells, especially if they are growing in a pot. It’s important to keep harvesting, cutting the plants right to the ground, to encourage young, fresh, tender and beautiful new leaves to form. Don’t let it run up to flower, or if it does, just cut it to the ground again. You can do this many times a year and it won’t resent it.
Storing Harvest regularly, ideally straight from the garden, allow to soak for an hour in a sink of cold water and use, or store (for up to a week) in a plastic bag in the fridge.
Harvesting Pick leaves by hand from spring to early autumn. Young leaves near the tips of shoots taste better than larger leaves lower down the stems.
Cooking Notes Use in mixed leaf salads.
