More Details

One of my favourite summer plants in the white garden at Sissinghurst, tall, elegant, and ghostly, particularly at dusk. An ethereal and stylish cut flower, arranged simply on its own.

Group/Species hypochondriacus
Variety Milas Snow Queen
Type Hardy Annual
Common Name Corncockle
Border Position Container Garden
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Site Full Sun
Moisture Well-drained
Height 1.2m (4ft)
Spacing 30cm (12in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Best sown direct outside March-May. Sow as thinly as possible into soil with a fine consistency, it should have no lumps bigger than a large marble. Water gently using a fine rose on your watering can so as not to displace the seed. If it doesn't rain you may need to water again to keep the soil moist. Seedlings should appear within 2-3 weeks. Once seedlings are 2-3cm (1in) tall and have a pair of leaves that look like tiny versions of what you would expect to see on the parent plant, thin them out, leaving one good plant every 10cm (4in). Thin again in a month or so to the final planting distance, you can re-plant the seedlings you remove to elsewhere in the garden or put them in the compost bin.
Care Tips Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms to form. Cut back seed heads if you do not want it to self-sow. CAUTION: All parts, but particularly the seeds may cause severe discomfort if ingested. Will need staking.
Flowering June - October
Vase Life Sear stem ends in boiling water for 15 seconds, and then leave in cool water, ideally overnight before arranging.
Harvesting June - October. Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms. Will self-sow.
