More Details

Sweet Pea 'Matucana' is a bi-colour magenta and purple. The strongest scented sweet pea in the world! 10/10 scent.

This variety is an heirloom grandiflora type, and is often confused with Sweet Pea 'Cupani'. The origins are unclear, but it may have originated in Peru.

No garden is complete without sweet peas. Grow them over arches, teepees and trellis and plant them with your runner beans to draw lots of insect pollinators into your veg patch. Sweet peas are all easy to grow and will fill your garden and house with the best scent ever.

We sow our highly-scented, old-fashioned sweet pea seeds in the winter, as well as in the spring, so that you will have excellent productive plants throughout the summer. Our sweet pea seedlings come with full planting instructions.

Genus Lathyrus odoratus
Group/Species Grandiflora
Variety Matucana
Type Hardy Annual Climber
Common Name Sweet Pea
Border Position Climber
Soil Type Fertile, Neutral
Scent Scented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 2 metres (6ft)
Spacing Plant out, 2 plants to a vertical support, 15cm (6in) apart in a mild spell in March-May.
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow October-December or January-March, 2 seeds into 1 rootrainer. When roots fill container, pot on 2 seedlings together into a 1 litre pot. Pinch out tips when plants have 4 pairs of leaves. If autumn sown, overwinter in a light, cool place. Sweet peas often have quite a hard seed coat so it may help to soften the seed before sowing. To do this, place the seeds on some damp kitchen paper and pop them in a warm spot. Once the seeds start to swell or sprout they are ready to sow. If the seeds don’t seem to be swelling you can try making a small nick in the seed coat (opposite the ‘eye’) as this will help moisture enter the seed and kick-start the germination process.
Care Tips Remove the climbing tendrils as they grow. Tie the stem into your framework on a regular basis. Can be grown in deep container pots up a climbing frame. Find out how to cordon train your sweet pea in Sarah's how-to guide.
Flowering May - August (winter-sown) or June - September (spring-sown), or 12-14 weeks from spring-sowing of seed.
Vase Life 4-5 days. Avoid direct sunlight and heat. This has a beautiful scent.
Harvesting Keep picking as often as you can.

Hardly any flower even though I planted them in different places in the garden in pots as I only have a small garden.

VERY PERFUMED AND VIBRANT. If there was a negative, it would be that the majority of the stems were very short.
My antirrhitham seeds did not grow so you sent replacement seeds. I didnt plant these as the season was progressing.

Sown in spring, these have been the best scented sweet peas I've ever grown, richly coloured and flowering in profusion from June to September. I think they only finished flowering when they did because I stopped picking them regularly and they went to seed (I couldn't keep up with the amount of flowers that just kept coming). The flower stems got shorter as the summer went on which stretched my imagination for vase substitutes, but my house has been constantly beautifully fragranced. I will be sowing them in the autumn this time in order to get slightly earlier flowers next year.

Absolute jewels!

I only bought four of these seedlings and lost one immediately to the snails, however the remaining three have filled me with joy all season with their irridescent jewel colours cheering me up daily .At the height of the season I was cutting 50 stems a time and they are still delivering, allbeit with shorter stems. An absolute must for next year.

So beautiful!

I bought these as seedlings having never had much luck growing from seed. I will buy these again! I can't believe how many beautiful little vases of sweet peas these have produced for me already (early July) and they don't look like slowing down anytime soon!

Spring sown seeds, started flowering in July…and still producing a couple of bunches a week in October. And the scent is wonderful!
