There are few scents to rival philadelphus - or 'Mock Orange' - and few varieties more glamorous than this long-standing garden classic 'Manteau d'Hermine'. an unusually compact form, perfect for town and city gardens with less space. It will take salt too, so you'll often see this form in coastal gardens.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Plant somewhere you can enjoy the scent. Will tolerate any reasonably fertile well-drained soil, including chalk. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the area before planting. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi into the base of the planting hole, backfill, firm in and water well. Plant at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. |
Care Tips | Pruning is not essential every year but will help to promote vigour and growth. Prune after flowering, removing any dead or damaged wood and cutting back to a healthy bud. You can also remove around one quarter to one third of stems back to the ground to help retain an open shape. Mulch in spring with well-rotted manure or garden compost. |
