If I was only allowed to take one plant to a desert island, this would be in the running. It flowers May to November with petals cut from silk velvet. It is unfussy and easy to grow in a pot or border.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Plant in moist but well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered spot and sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole. For best effect plant in groups of 3's. |
Care Tips | A salvia that needs well drained conditions through winter. Do not prune back in winter, keep current years growth and remove when new shoots appear. Protect young plants from late frosts and mulch annually with well-rotted manure or garden compost. In season remove faded flower spikes to encourage further blooms and feed every 2 weeks. These Salvia are tuberous that over time develop an underground energy source that strengthens their hardiness. |

As long as there is protection from slugs to begin with ( I used copper rings) they are fine. I grow them with white Gaura and deep pink Cleome and orange Canna Lillies with a raised background of Perovskia. What a treat and much admired. |

However this was a replacement plant as the original plant was supplied with 3 of the 4 stems snapped off by careless/poor delivery. Dark and mysterious

The blooms are very dark purple and definitely have a gothic look. Some of the leaves became lacey but I think that was lack of water! Watering can at the ready now. Would buy again. |
just don't cut it
