I have this wonderful plant in the perennial borders at Perch Hill. It has amazing, ruffled green flowers and lasts at least 3 weeks in a vase.
It's the texture of these flowers, as well as the colours which make these such exceptional spring-flowering plants. You can grow them in pots – as a collection – in the middle of your table, or plant them in the garden and pick the odd flower from there. They love a bit of light shade.
Genus | Polyanthus |
Variety | Francesca |
Type | Hardy Perennial |
Common Name | Primula |
Border Position | Front |
Soil Type | Neutral |
Scent | Unscented |
Site | Full Sun, Part Shade |
Moisture | Moist but Well-drained |
Height | 30cm (12in) |
Spacing | 25cm (10in) |
Care Tips | Protect from the birds by constructing a simple web of black cotton tied on short twigs pushed into the ground to stand about 8cm above the flowers. |
Flowering | April - June |
Vase Life | Sear the stem ends in boiling water to make them last up to 3 weeks in the vase. |

Polyanthus 'Francesca' reviews
Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Stephen Excellent service and plants top quality as always |
Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Jill Flowered but not as wow as the description lead me to believe. Maybe it’s in the wrong place. Too shady |
Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Alison Beautiful plants, still flowering in July. |
Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Elizabeth This is a stunning little plant. We grow them in pots on steps and our visitors love them. The little lime green flowers just keep coming. We grow pots of geranium Lord Bute alongside in summer for a beautiful colour partnership! Very well worth the money. We have ordered loads more as pot toppers for tulips again this year! The service from Sarah Raven is always excellent. Plants are well packaged and arrive fit and healthy! Highly recommended! |
