More Details

One of the best perennials for pollinators and easy to grow from seed, Echinaceas are also brilliant for picking, with plenty of flowers right into late autumn, which last two weeks in the vase.

Genus Echinacea purpurea
Group/Species pallida
Type Hardy Perennial
Common Name Coneflower
Border Position Middle
Soil Type Chalky, Clay, Fertile, Neutral, Sandy
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Well-drained
Height 1m (3ft)
Spacing 45cm (18in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Plant in deep, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Give them space to establish as echinacea do not like to be crowded and avoid damp spots. Incorporate plenty of organic matter, such as well-rotted manure or garden compost, into the soil before planting. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well.
Care Tips Once planted, echinacea are best left alone as they do not transplant well. Cut back stems as the blooms fade to encourage further flowering or leave the flowers to fade on the plant and provide winter interest.
Flowering June - September
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
  • Sow Under Cover/Plant Indoors
  • Direct Sow/Plant Outdoors
  • Flowers/Harvest

Love these plants, I've only had 5 flower stems from 2 plants and the other not produced a flower this year but the plants are healthy and grown well.
