Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Plant in full sun, soil should be well-drained and average to humus-rich. Allow good spacing between plants to aid air circulation and help prevent problems with mildew. Add grit to the base of the hole on heavy ground. Water until established. Plant in groups of 3 or more. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well after planting. |
Care Tips | Cut back in late Autumn. Pinch in midsumer to encourage a great flowering season. Most asters will need dividing every fourth year to maintain vigour which is best done in spring as new growth starts. Lift the clump and split using two back-to-back forks. Take care as old stems can be sharp. Discard old woody pieces and use newer sections from the outside of the clump to re-plant. |
Flowering | July - October |
Vase Life | They will look good for a fortnight. If you strip all the leaves below the water line and thin out the leaves up the stem a bit more, and put a drop of bleach in the water, it will maximise the cut-flower potential. |
