Persicarias come into their own as many summer perennials fade. I have come to truly love them mixed with hydrangeas in a dappled shady border and picked as the upper storey for a vase.
Genus | Persicaria |
Group/Species | amplexicaulis |
Variety | Firetail |
Type | Perennial |
Border Position | Border (Middle) |
Soil Type | Broad Tolerance |
Scent | Unscented |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Moist but Well-drained |
Height | 1.2m (4ft) |
Spacing | 1.2m (4ft) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Plant in groups of 3 or more. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well after planting. |
Care Tips | Spreads rapidly to become a 1m-wide clump within two seasons. It then seems to become self-limiting since the oldest part of the plant dies back each year with younger shoots emerging to renew the plant. We recommend lifting and dividing after every three years. |
Flowering | July - September |
Harvesting | Flower production: 3 months. |

Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Diane Found this plant potted but not in the garden and really struggled as to why I bought it. The leaves are so ugly and ungainly. Looked it up in a gardening book and still couldn’t see why I had bought it. Looked it up in a Sarah Raven catelogue and there was a photo of pretty orange red flowers, no sign of foliage and that’s why I bought it. Clever marketing but now I have one ugly plant to place. |
