Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Half-hardy annuals will require protection until after the last frosts when they can be planted outside. Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before moving to their final position. Choose a spot in full sun or light shade, ideally with moist but well-drained soil. Prepare the final planting area well by adding plenty of organic matter (such as Orgro or home-made compost) and forking it through your topsoil. You want soil with a fine tilth (or texture). Water plants well or soak for 20 minutes in a bucket or wheelbarrow of water if they look dry. Mark out your planting positions with empty plant pots, leaving plenty of space for plants to spread. Dig holes deep and wide enough so that the roots are covered and the crown (or base) of the plant is level with the soil surface. Backfill around each plant and firm the soil gently. You should be able to tug gently on the leaves without the plant lifting out of the ground. Water them in well and water again, with a flood, not a sprinkle, every 5-7 days (if no rain), to encourage roots to be drawn down deep. For growing in pots, use as large a container as possible, as this won't dry out so quickly and will require less watering. As a general guide we recommend 9-10 plants to a 40cm (16in) diameter container. |
Care Tips | Deadhead to prolong the flowering period. Water well in the first two weeks, to prevent the plants from drying out. |

White Pot Collection reviews
Reviewed 20th April 2020 by Michael Some plants already dead . |
Reviewed 19th August 2019 by Wendy Generally fantastic and I will definitely buy this collection, from Sarah Raven again. The Cosmos are the hardiest I have ever encountered, have flowered non-stop since about week 2 of planting and are still going strong. I had several months of success from the lovely Osteospermum and the Phlox was delightful, but much shorter lived. |
Reviewed 3rd August 2019 by Shirley This year the cosmos were disappointing one failed and one has become quite large . The flex put in a brief appearance ... Sadly not the success of my first year . |
Reviewed 3rd August 2019 by Margaret 9 seedlings in a large pot seemed impossible to grow to a display......but with flowers starting to appear in May and cosmos that are 3 feet high at present we have a dazzling white foil for all the rest of our colourful garden. |

Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Barbara M West The Cosmos did not do well and hasn't yet flowered. Not sure why as I have other Cosmos which I grew and which is doing OK. Otherwise a great collection of seedlings. |
Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Mrs Wynn-Werninck Calibrachoa Can Can Black Cherry - absolutely beautiful. will get it next year |
Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Susan All arrived in good condition. I bought the same collection and learn't from last hear and pinched out the cosmos hard so they did not grow so high, also not as many in the pot. Pots are against a wall so some height at the back is fine but I think next year I will rethink and buy the plants separately without the cosmos. All plants doing very well and looking great. |
Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Mrs Kidd Marvellous , are doing very well . |

Reviewed 7th November 2018 by Gillia All flowers grew and came out well in time for a wedding in July. The only thing I have to report is that the Cosmos grew taller than the other plants in the trough. |
Reviewed 7th November 2018 by Jenny I had this selection a year ago and I think they were successful. However this year I was disappointed as the cosmos completely dominated the pots growing very tall and vigorously and the other plants struggled to come into their own. |
Reviewed 7th November 2018 by Andrew All bar one of the cosmos in the white pot collection turned out to be pink! Looked pretty but not what I ordered. |
Reviewed 7th November 2018 by Marion Several of the Cosmos plants were pink and several were blind with lush foliage |
Reviewed 3rd October 2018 by Mrs Chadwick Disappointed with the cosmos. Only one plant survived and is only just flowering. White pot collection
Reviewed 24th April 2018 by Elizabeth Overton I bought this collection. it was all stunning and I am about to buy them again. |
Lovely collection
Reviewed 28th July 2017 by Gabbi Haworth This pot collection is lovely. I agree the cosmos is the largest bit of it by far, but the smaller ones underneath look lovely too. It's a beautiful collection all together and would buy it again. Believe it or not, this is the first time I have grown Cosmos. I can't believe I left it so long! It's standing up well to all the rain and I love it! |
Disappointed
Reviewed 16th July 2017 by Pauline Wilby The cosmos have overwhelmed the phlox and the osteosperum in spite of not feeding at all. They still have to flower but would not order again as would look for a smaller cosmos. It's a shame that the photo slightly misrepresents this collection Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for your feedback. Posted 17th July 2017 |
No flowers on the white collection
Reviewed 13th July 2017 by Jacqueline Chelin
This collection looked ever so appealing in the picture, I bought it May, unfortunately there are still absolutely no flowers on the cosmos. here were a few on the Osteospernum which have now faded and no new ones. There are some on the phlox. Why is this? So disappointed. Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that this collection has not performed well, it is certainly not the quality and outcome we expect, and fully understand your disappointment. Posted 14th July 2017 |
Slightly disappointed
Reviewed 17th August 2016 by Teresa Foley Unfortunately the cosmos have totally overshadowed the phlox and osteosphermum. I think a smaller cosmos would have been better i.e. Xanthos - although not completely white it would have blended really well with the other two plants. Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that the cosmos have overshadowed the other plants, what a shame. The collection normally works very well together and the variety in heights normally complement each other. We will record this feedback for future planning, if you have been feeding the plants then it might be best to hold off for a while in case it is encouraging the cosmos to grow. Pinching out the cosmos at an early stage will also ensure that the growth is more bushier and controlled." Posted 19th August 2016 |
Absolutely fabulous!
Reviewed 30th June 2015 by Sue Dixon The white pot collections is bringing me so much joy... can't recommend it highly enough :o) |
Stunning and flowers for months - but keep individuals in check!
Reviewed 14th March 2015 by Mrs Alison Kempster
The photograph implies the relative sizes of the plants. This is not how it happened! I now assume cutting back the more vigorous osteospermum and cosmos is necessary to achieve that balance. Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you very much for your review, and yes, the cosmos and osteospermum will flower for a very long time with regular deadheading." Posted 17th March 2015 |
almost total failure
Reviewed 17th November 2014 by mary dunstan Planted quickly, but cosmos seedlings died after few days. More were sent gratis - these too died (my cosmos grown from seed are always great!). Phlox was very feeble. Only osteospermum fairly OK - some action in Oct/Nov. Am not inexperience gardener, but will NEVER buy seedlings again. Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for your comments. We're so sorry to hear of your disappointment with the seedlings. We normally have great success from all our seedling ranges, and lots of lovely photos of these pot collections on our Facebook page. Posted 18th November 2014 |
