There’s something hugely pleasurable about being able to pick lots of our own home-grown food through winter and with these four leafy greens, you’ll have meal after meal from October until May. And they look beautiful out there too. The one thing you need to know with these hardy varieties is how to harvest. You pick the outer leaves, always leaving the heart intact, don’t cut the whole plant off in one go.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Chard needs an open sunny site in rich, moisture-retentive free-draining soil, although it can tolerate some shade in summer. Add organic matter the autumn or winter prior to growing if necessary and on poor soils apply a balanced fertiliser, such as Organic GroChar Fertiliser. Chard also grows well in a pot, use a minimum 25cm (10in) deep container. |
Care Tips | Chard are easy to grow with little or no attention. Keep weeds down by regular hoeing between plants, and water regularly during dry weather to minimise the bitter mid-summer taste. To extend harvesting past the first hard frost you can put the plants under a cloche or polytunnel. |
Cooking Notes | Chard is actually two vegetables in one - separate the stem and the leaves, and cook the stem for 2-3 mins longer. Try Sarah's delicious Ithaca pie recipe - a local version of Spanakopita |
