More Details

This spectacular giant mauve globe allium follows on from Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation' in its flowering season, genuinely getting bigger and better every year.

Jonathan Buckley – who takes all our photos – recommended this one to me and he's right, it knocks the socks off all the huge-flowered forms and comes up reliably year on year.

This can be gift wrapped in our exclusive hessian sack, with ribbon and a Sarah Raven gift card. You will be able to add this to your basket once you begin the checkout process. To add a gift message to your order, simply fill out the details at the delivery stage of the checkout.

Genus Allium
Variety Globemaster
Type Hardy Perennial Bulb
Common Name Ornamental onion
Border Position Middle
Bulb Size 18/20
Soil Type Chalky, Fertile, Sandy
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Well-drained
Height 85cm (34in)
Spacing Plant 15cm (6in) deep, 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
Care Tips Remember these are very perennial so plant them somewhere permanent. Removing the tatty foliage doesn't appear to affect the bulbs. Add grit on heavy soils. Potted Alliums can be kept in the pots and allowed to flower for their first season. Either sink the pots directly into the border or place into a larger container. Once they have finished flowering, feed with comfrey tonic and leave them to die back naturally in the pots, this will help bulk up the bulbs for next year. When the bulbs have completely died back, lift them and plant out into their permanent garden position. Alternatively you can plant out the pot grown Alliums from February to May before they flower. A root system will have established, so take care when transplanting into position and be sure the planting depth matches that of the pot.
Flowering June - July
Vase Life Add a drop of bleach to the water to minimise the oniony smell or change the water regularly. They will look good for up to 2 weeks without rearranging.

Sarah Raven's bulb quality is excellent and all my bulbs (roughly about 50 of them) came up and bloomed all at the right time. I put in my order and the bulbs were delivered just at the right time for planting roughly 2 months later. They arrived well packaged and protected with bubble wrap and other packaging on the date I had been told they would arrive. The Sarah Raven customer service is excellent and provides you with everything you need to plant and look after your purchases. Her website is full of timely information and I cannot recommend it enough!

I am beyond delighted with all of my Allium, bought to create a special flowerbed to remember my friend Norman who loved nature. The blooms attract bees and Norman would be as delighted as the bees with the results!

These were disappointing. Only four came up - one of which didn’t flower but simply shrivelled up. Of the other three, two got quite long, the third was only 15cm high. They didn’t stay in bloom long, either. Ok, the weather has a part in all this, but the bulb failure rate was a lot higher than other bulbs I’ve bought from Sarah Raven.
