More Details

Two of the best varieties with great flavour. Tomato 'Sungold' produces small, golden yellow-orange tomatoes with the sweetest flavour of any I know. 'Noire de Crimée' is an extraordinary, crimson-skinned Russian tomato with incredible flavour and a firm yet juicy texture. Harvest according to feeling for ripeness, not the skin colour, as this can be misleading.

This collection contains:

Spacing 45cm (18in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Transplant seedlings into 9cm (3.5in) pots and grow on in a glasshouse (or a well-lit windowsill), once roots have filled these, transplant into 2 litre pots to grow on. When the first flowers begin to show their yellow colouring plants should be ready to plant into their final positions. For unheated greenhouses, final planting can take place in mid-spring. For growing outside, gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions before planting out in early summer. When planting into ground, add plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting and create a shallow circular reservoir around the plant to help retain water or use Ring Culture Pots. Leave 60-90cm (24-36in) between each plant and plant them deep, sinking them to a depth of 0.5cm below the seed leaves. For containers, use a large pot (minimum 5 litres) and fill with a good quality, peat-free compost. For Grow Bags, allow two plants per bag.
Care Tips Under cover or outside they need staking, regular watering and weekly feeding for best results. Water the soil, not the plant, tomato leaves and stems dislike getting wet. Pinch out the tops once they have set 5 or 6 trusses. You also need to pinch out any shoots that develop between the stem and main branches as they divert valuable energy from the developing fruits. Companion planting works well with tomatoes. Try basil underneath as a sacrificial planting – white fly is drawn to it rather than your tomatoes – or try garlic, nasturtiums or tagetes to repel aphids. Storing Tomatoes can be kept at room temperature for 4-5 days (they will lose their flavour if kept in the fridge), and will freeze well.

The plants were in very good condition when I received them. I planted them up in big pots and they have grown well. The cold June didn’t help tomatoes this year, but I am now getting some ripe tomatoes.

Super plants. Great tasting tomatoes. First class quality

The sungold were fabulous, prolific and flavoursome. The noire de Crimee were a waste of money. Style over substance. Utterly tasteless and not worth planting.

Again plants packed extremely well, and all the plants performed well, the Noire de Crimee tomato plants I hadn't grown before but I would grow them again

I loved the idea of these tomatoes, but in the end I think I prefer the smaller ones which are easier to get ripe evenly rather than the problem of one side the the fruit being red and the other green. This might be a reflection of my skills as a gardener. Would have liked to know which seedling was which variety.

The Noire de Crimee produced fab tasting toms despite their ugly appeance, reminiscent of Mediterranean holiday toms. The sun gold are still producing sweet toms and I expect they will for a few more weeks. All this despite the hot summer.

Tomatoes as seen in Italy

The Noire de Crimee tomatoes reminded us of the lovey tomatoes seen on market stalls in Italy. I grew them from seedlings in the greenhouse and had some huge fruits. Perhaps I did not care for them properly because the crop was small. The smell was enticing and the tastes of warm tomatoes fresh from the greenhouse was wonderful. I will grow them again next year and be more confident with them
