An extraordinary, crimson-skinned, Russian Tomato, with incredible flavour and firm, but juicy texture for the ultimate tomato salad.
This comes from the Crimea, an area of Europe with a similar climate to ours, so this is much better suited to growing in Britain, inside or out, than many Southern European, hotter climate forms. My current favourite salad variety.
Genus | Lycopersicon lycopersicum |
Group/Species | Heritage |
Variety | 'Noire de Crimèe' |
Type | Half-Hardy Annual |
Common Name | Black Krim Tomato |
Soil Type | Fertile |
Site | Full Sun, Shelter |
Moisture | Well-drained |
Height | 1.5m (5ft) |
Spacing | Leave 60-90cm (24-36in) between each plant. Plant them deep, sinking them to a depth of 0.5cm below the seed leaves. |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Sow under cover at end of Jan-March for planting out in April/May. |
Care Tips | Under cover or outside they need staking, and regular watering and feeding for best results. Need trimming and support, pinch out the tops once they have set 5 or 6 trusses. While still small, you also need to pinch out the side shoots. Water regularly to prevent splitting. Find more information on how to grow tomatoes from seed. |
Storing | Tomatoes can be kept at room temperature for 4-5 days (they will lose their flavour if kept in the fridge), and will freeze well. |
Harvesting | Cordons fruit over a long period. You should be picking tomatoes in July and continue harvesting from the cordons until October. |
Cooking Notes | These are delicious raw or cooked. Or try adding it to Sarah's Chilli jam recipe, for a rich colour and intense flavour. |

Tomato 'Noire de Crimèe' reviews
Gorgeous tomatoes
Reviewed 7th August 2018 by Abigail Smith I am growing these in my greenhouse with a watering system, so have not had any splitting, despite ultra hot temperatures! These are the best tomatoes I have grown, some as large as an apple with a flavour you only get with home grown tomatoes. This will be grown every year from now on. |
Most incredible tomatoes ever tasted!
Reviewed 8th October 2017 by Mary Lloyd Best tomatoe tasted in 30 years. When you cook with them they have the intensive flavour of tomatoe puree. Won't be without these from now on |
Large and sweet, excellent
Reviewed 22nd August 2017 by Annie Hazell I'm growing these outdoors and they have been superb. Large round fruits that are super sweet when ripe. The have a tendency to split slightly - the plants I gave away have done the same - but this has not affected the quality of the fruit in any way. Will definitely be growing again in the future. |
Delicious
Reviewed 27th September 2014 by Gwynedd Lloyd Grew in greenhouse. Real tomatoes, large, sweet, distinctive flavour. Excellent sliced in salad and cooked whole or in sauce. Will definitely grow more next year. |
