Description
A close relative and shrubbier version of the Juneberry Amelanchier, the Saskatoon is a very hardy and adaptable tree, easy to grow in any soil, even chalk, dry or damp but fruiting better in full sun.
The berries are dark purple and sweet, some say with a nutty, apple like flavour, rich in iron and copper. It has even been used to make a tea from the leaves in Canada where it has a long tradition of being used raw, cooked, and preserved.
Care Tips
To achieve the best autumn colour, grow in a sunny position on moist soil that does not have high lime levels. Avoid pruning this small tree to preserve its natural shape.
