Quick Overview

Courgette Romanesco.

Product Description

Recommended to me by many foodies, Courgette 'Romanesco' is a wonderful courgette with characteristic ribs down the fruit. It has excellent flavour and texture, not ever turning watery, even when quite large. Picked small and whole, the flavour reminds me of globe artichoke hearts. Its flowers are huge too - ideal for stuffing and dipping into tempura batter.

Do at least two sowings of courgettes, splitting your packets, so that you have fruit to pick for 3-4 months at a stretch. And sow two or three different colours so they look good in the garden and on the plate (see multi-coloured courgette collection).

  • Half-hardy annual
  • EASY
  • Sow: March-July
  • Seeds: 10

Sowing: Soak seed overnight and sow under cover in late March. Push seed vertically down (to prevent it rotting), 2-3cm deep into a 9cm pot of compost. Can be sown direct after last frosts.
Final Thinning/Planting Distance: 90cm apart in each direction when the plants have 5-6 leaves. Need rich, well-manured ground and plenty of watering in dry weather.
Harvesting: Late June to September.Start picking as soon as fruits are 7cm long. You can pick the flowers before this.
