The best salads often have lettuce as their base - to give you background flavours and plenty of crunch. These are our top favourite lettuce varieties for the winter.

We've chosen these lettuces because they performed best on taste and productivity in the garden.

Genus Lactuca sativa

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Direct sow in small batches every 4-6 weeks from February-early September. Water the drill before sowing to decrease temperatures and sow in the evening. Can also sow in modules under cover from February-March and/or September-October.
Storing Pick just before serving.
Harvesting 6-8 weeks from sowing, giving leaves for about 3 months. Harvest just outer leaves so plant can continue to grow. Successional sowing should provide leaves nearly all year. Keep picking regularly to prevent flowers running to seed.
