Episode 183 advice sheet

March & April (4:35)

For the early part of the year, there are some standout varieties among the tulip and honesty families - Sarah has to recommend her namesake, while also giving a nod towards Tulip Ballerina for its striking orange silhouette with a lovely sweet scent, similar to one of Josie’s picks for orange tulips, Orca.

Among the honesty family, both the purple Lunaria annua and the white albiflora are incredible choices to bring a brilliant glow to dark patches in the garden.

May - July (7:50)

Summer presents an opportunity to highlight some remarkable performers in the garden, particularly the alliums in May - both schubertii 'Magic' and cristophii are shapely, large and long-lasting.

Other great picks for impact in the summer months include the watercolour beauty of Rosa ‘Hot Chocolate’, and unbeatable scent of Sweet Pea ‘Matucana’.

August & September (14:30)

Cosmos are order of the month for August, and while ‘Xsenia’ might have an exotic name, its painterly poise evokes the beauty of a classic still life drawing, and the pairing of two of our own dahlias in September - Adam’s Choice and Rosie Raven - makes for a worthy successor on the way into autumn.

October & November (19:00)

With winter knocking on the door, it’s a surprise to see a rose at its finest in October, but Rosa Cinco de Mayo makes its smouldering appearance as late as any other rose.

Sarah & Josie round off the episode with a hearty mention for Salvia ‘Amistad’, with it’s elongated, colourful appearance attracting bees and butterflies to its silky velvety visage.
