YOUR GARDEN STORIES WITH
Lucinda Chambers
WHO INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO GARDENING?
My mother was a mad keen gardener. I remember as a child she had vegetable gardens, an Italian garden and a rose garden. She taught herself how to build dry stone walls and was never not out in all weathers.
WHERE DO YOU GARDEN?
I do day to day snipping and planting and I would say ‘tending’ at home in west London, gentle and often and then I do heavy chainsawing, clearing of brambles and massive weeding in our house in France. They are in stark contrast to each other!
WHAT DOES GARDENING DO FOR YOU EITHER PHYSICALLY OR EMOTIONALLY?
I find gardening really meditative. You can switch off a busy mind but keep the body moving. I find the exercising of patience very helpful. The delight in deferred gratification, the wonderment of when something flourishes is something I never quite get over or take for granted. I have come to gardening quite late so I was ready for it.
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE THREE DESERT ISLAND PLANTS WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
I have just planted a Mimosa tree. I love the fact that it flowers when barely anything else does at that time, it’s so optimistic and so is the colour, electric yellow.
A Dog Rose, reminds me of being a child and also they are so dear in the wild, brave and beautiful along the hedgerows.
A Japanese maple. We planted one many years ago and it’s huge now. It’s such a calm presence, low and light.
WHAT IS THE GARDENING OR FLORISTRY TOOL YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT?
A really good pair of secateurs.
