My favourite new dwarf variety. It’s an excellent tasty kale which is ideal for smaller veg plots, containers or the urban garden.

Genus Brassica
Group/Species oleracea var. capitata
Variety Curly Scarlet
Type Hardy Annual
Common Name Curly Kale
Border Position Middle
Soil Type Fertile
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 90cm (36in)
Spacing 60cm (24in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow Feb-May. Can be started under cover (in individual cells to minimise root disturbance) or sown direct. Prefers a firm, rich fertile, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Prepare the soil in early spring by digging over and adding plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. Apply lime to acidic soils to lessen the risk of clubroot. When transplanting seedlings, plant slightly deeper in the ground than they were previously growing, spacing plants 60cm (24in) apart. Water thoroughly after planting.
Care Tips Cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Remove yellowing leaves, mulch thickly and keep weed-free. This is a very disease-resistant plant and grows well in a large container pot.
Storing Store in the fridge for up to 10 days, or in the freezer for 6 months.
Harvesting June - October. This will produce it's characteristic frilly leaves for 6 months. Harvest once the leaves get to about 15cm long.

These grew to lovely little plants, but then unfortunately developed some disease and I have lost them all.
