Johnnie Boden
Johnnie Boden CBE is the founder and creative director of the British clothing brand Boden. Flowers are always on his mind, whether he’s collaborating with his creative team or unwinding on his wildflower meadows in West Dorset.
“Nature is a constant source of inspiration in my day job, whether we’re creating a new colour palette, developing a floral print or choosing velvet colours. And Dahlias are the best bit of Autumn, my otherwise least favourite season. It is impossible to have richer, warmer colours than these natural ones. They transport me to noisy dinners with lots of red wine, smiling faces and laughter”

YOUR GARDEN STORIES WITH
Johnnie Boden
WHO INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO GARDENING?
My dad, he arranged flowers beautifully and also played piano, that's my happiest memory of him. He very kindly allowed me to be in charge of the veg garden, where I was particularly good at brussels sprouts.
WHERE DO YOU GARDEN?
At home on my farm in Dorset
WHAT DOES GARDENING DO FOR YOU EITHER PHYSICALLY OR EMOTIONALLY?
I think beauty is terribly important in our lives. If there's no beauty there's no life for me. I can't think of a simpler way of enhancing my mood when I see a beautiful garden. It is also so therapeutic, we all have so many worries and it's such an easy way to relax and feel fulfilled and refreshed
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE SOME DESERT ISLAND PLANTS WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Alchemilla Mollis it is such an easy plant and it keeps coming back and has lovely shades of green. Also nepeta, if you don't have the time to garden you can smother your beds with these two
WHAT IS A VARIETY YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT?
I love hawthorn, I have a farm and my vision is to take all the fencing away so that all we have is thorn hedges. I love hawthorn in the spring, I love it in the autumn and I love jumping the hedges on my horse when it's nice and thick
