Sowing, Seeds, Planting Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frosts in your area. Surface sow onto trays, pots or modules filled with good quality seed compost. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover as light is required for germination. Seedlings may be slow to appear, if germination hasn't occurred after 4 weeks move to a cooler position (e.g. a coldframe or unheated greenhouse) for 4 weeks and then back to warmth. Pot seedlings on, good light levels, cool air temperatures (just above freezing) and warm roots are ideal for growing on. Gradually harden off before transplanting outdoors in mid-spring once frost danger has passed, space plants 60cm (24in) apart or growing in a large container pot.
Care Tips Water well until established. Cut lavender stems for the vase when the lowest blossom opens making a cut slightly above the first set of leaves. Trim back after flowering or the following spring to maintain a compact, rounded habit and help prevent the plant becoming too woody. Remove shoots that have flowered to within 2cm of previous years growth. Lavender is short-lived and will need replacing after 7-10 years.
Flowering May - September
Vase Life Strip the bottom leaves and then sear stem ends in boiling water for 10 seconds. Leave in cool water, ideally overnight before arranging. For drying, hang these upside, using an elastic band, which will shrink as stems dry.
Harvesting Flowers May - September. Keep picking for longer flowering. This dries brilliantly.
