More Details

Verbena bonariensis produces a haze of purple flowers at shoulder height in the autumn. If you keep picking it, it will shorten and broaden a bit – no bad thing.

Mix it with Cosmos 'Purity' and Gaura lindheimeri to create a lovely, airy filling to a border, and there is no better plant for lining a path. It is summer and autumn-flowering.

Genus Verbena
Group/Species bonariensis
Type Short-lived Perennial (grown as a Hardy Annual)
Common Name Purple Top
Border Position Back, Middle
Soil Type Chalky, Neutral, Sandy
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained, Well-drained
Height 1.8m (5ft 11in)
Spacing 30cm (12in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover from March-April, plant out after last frosts or direct sow in May. Grow in moist but well-drained soil in full sun, in colder regions they may need protection. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well after planting. Will self-seed.
Care Tips Borderline hardy, may be damaged by winter frosts, avoid this by leaving the dead stalks until spring, when new growth is evident, before cutting them back. A protective mulch should be added around them in the autumn with leaf mould or compost.
Flowering July - November, 14 weeks after sowing seed
Vase Life 7-10 days. Sear the stem ends in water to decrease petal drop once cut. Will also dry.
Harvesting Flower production: 3 months.

I am afraid that they did not germinate so have had to buy the plant from our local nursery.

All verbena growing furiously and looking good. However, other things I have bought this Spring/Summer not so good. The Clematis Taiga looks as if it is dead although it is on a wall where I grow several other clematis successfully. I also bought the Ladybird Rose nasturtiums and they were very sickly and have succumbed already. The tomato Sungold and Noire de Crimee collection proved to have only one Noire plant and four Sungold - I think it was supposed to be 2/3! And the Cosmos collection is not quite as billed for the mix of colours. However
all other things, sweet peas, zinnias, marigolds, salvias, wallflowers, salads etc have all done well.

Lost two of the ten which weren't as strong as the others, and they were very slow to thrive, but the remaining eight are now in flower and looking very healthy. Fingers crossed they may last into next year.

Decided to purchase some extra Verbena Bonariensis for my garden as I feel one can never have too many and I'm impatient. Arrived very well packaged, lovely strong plants that have performed beautifully over the summer and still have some flowers in mid November. Looking forward to lots of self seedlings.

This is by far my favourite flower to grow. Bees and butterflies adore it, and in a large vase on its own looks stunning. I particularly love the fallen petals on the table top as the days go by, looks like scattered lavender petals and lasts for ever.

One of the best

I grew this in my cutting beds this year, and have never seen so many bees and butterflies in my garden. Masses of flowers to cut every week, the tall stems look great in a big bunch in a large vase, and last for ages

Excellent

Grew this from seed two years ago. Flowered first year, continuing to flower after an early year cut down. Self seed happily if you're light on the hoe & look out for them. Recommended.

Excellent Performance

Grown from seed and performed (and still are) really well in our garden this year. Work very well as cutting flowers, too. Definitely on the list for next year.
