Sowing, Seeds, Planting Choose a suitable location in a border that will get plenty of warm sunlight in summer, they love scorched and free-draining soil. Fritillaria grow from bulbs which look like onions. Dig a hole 4 times as deep as the bulb is high, the deeper the better as this will make stronger plants less likely to snap and more reliably perennial. Position the bulbs on a bed of grit, on their side in each hole to avoid water getting into the bulb and causing them to rot. Backfill with plenty of grit to aid drainage. After flowering has ended, wait until the leaves and stem turn yellow, after which it can be cut off at the base.
Care Tips The bulbs can remain dormant in the soil throughout summer and will begin to grow again the following spring. Then add slug deterrents around new growth in early spring.
Flowering April - May
Vase Life Strip the bottom leaves and then sear the stem end in boiling water for 20 seconds, and then put them in deep cold water to extend their vase life for as long as possible.
